The connection between the royal house, the House of Orange-Nassau, and the country now known as the Netherlands begang long before, in the 15th century. Stadholder William I, or William the Silent (1533-1584), who led the revolt against the king of Spain, is regarded as the founder of the dynasty. The present publication is a short survey of the history of the House of Orange-Nassau. It also provides general information on membership of the royal house, its palaces, coats of arms and standards, and brief biographies of its present members.
