''In de jaren 1970-1980 heeft de fotografie vaste voet aan de grond gekregen in de wereld van kunstinstellingen. In die jaren werd het denken over kunst nog sterk bepaald door het idee van nationale culturele identiteit en was het gebruikelijk aandacht te schenken aan specifieke tradities en kunstuitingen.Vandaag lijken deze ideeën minder aanwezig, maar toch blijvn we ervan overtuigd dat ze een nuttig kader bieden voor een beter begrip van de hedendaagse fotografische praktijk. The Unwanted Self is een eerste stap in het herdenken van deze hypothese'' Een fotografische voorstelling van 33 Nederlandse en Belgische fotografen, aangevuld met essays over fotografie in de lage landen door: David Green, Pool Andries & Frits Gierstberg,Liesbeth Decan,Kitty Zijlmans, Inge Henneman, Manu d'Autreppe en als laatste Marc Quaghebeur. Verschijnt naar aanleiding van de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in de University of Brighton Gallery ( 4 april tot 14 mei 2008) This major exhibition will showcase the work of nine internationally renowned photographers rarely seen in the UK and which exemplifies current tendencies indicative of contemporary 'low countries' photography. Belgian photographers - Geert Goiris, Gert Jochems, Marie-Francoise Plissart and Marc Trivier - and Dutch photographers - Frank van der Salm, Gertjan Kocken, Marnix Goosens, Viviane Sassen and Maritine Stig - are included in the exhibition, which seeks to explore the relationships between the genres that each artists is working within and the national contexts and traditions that might inevitably shape and influence what they do. The exhibition has been organised by David Green (University of Brighton ) in collaboration with Jan Baetens (University of Leuven, Institute for Cultural Studies ), Frits Gierstberg (Nederlands Fotomuseum ), Rotterdam and Christoph Ruys (FotoMuseum Antwerp ).
